Quarry spalls are irregularly crushed rock. In general, they come in two varieties: small (2″ by 4″) and large (4″ by 8″). However, they may appear visually larger. The rocks get their size designations from the sizes to which they are screened. They can be compacted, and they are useful for both construction and residential applications.
In construction applications, the 4″ by 8″ variety of quarry spall can be used to backfill rock walls. This both supports the wall and provides drainage. Sites that make use of trenches can also benefit by using large quarry spalls to provide trench stabilization. They are also useful for construction entrances, armoring slopes, and providing support to wet areas that would otherwise be unstable.
Smaller quarry spalls can also be useful for road construction, as they are an excellent material for the subbase below pavement. Again, quarry spalls provide support and drainage here.
Quarry spalls also shine in residential applications. For instance, spalls can serve as a road base for new driveways. Additionally, they can also be used to build retaining walls, such as those around a flower bed or garden. Quarry spalls can also serve a decorative purpose; for example, they are an attractive way to line a garden or other area.
